The George Wimpey development has been designed by architects Broadway Malyan in collaboration with Wayne and Gerardine Hemingway. The Hemingways were behind the Red or Dead fashion label and housing is now one of their many areas of interest and influence. In this, the Hemingways’ mission statement is: ‘Homes have to be affordable and make people happy.’ Wayne is the Chairman of Building For Life, which rewards great housing schemes (www.buildingforlife.org), and the Hemingways both received MBEs in last year's Queens Birthday Honours List in recognition of their achievements in housing design. The Bridge will be their first housing development in Kent.
Wayne recognises the importance of the Thames Gateway region as ‘possibly Britain’s most ambitious development and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create something wonderful for Britain that could be the envy of the world.’
He goes on to say: ‘The Bridge is going to be fantastic (naturally!!!!) with its 1134 modern homes complemented by wonderful landscaping, leisure space, parkland, community facilities, a new school, healthcare, shops, an innovation park with 4000 jobs and a new transit system.’
‘The Bridge will be a unique neighbourhood for Dartford and for the Thames Gateway. The modern style of the new homes and the green open spaces that surround them will appeal to everyone who shares our vision for The Bridge as a pioneering new community’.
